Pottery: Frequently Asked Questions
- STUDIO PROCESS -
Question: Do you make all of this yourself?
Answer: Yes I do. I've been making pottery since 2001 and have been doing this full time since 2006.
Question: Do you have a kiln?
Answer: Yes, we have a total of three.
- DURABILITY & USAGE -
Question: Does your pottery scratch easily?
Answer: Depends, I guess. It can, I would be foolish to say it couldn't. It depends on how it is handled and what it is put on. We personally have a glass table top and have few/no scratches on it. Did I mention we have three small children that use the pottery?
Question: Does your pottery break easily?
Answer: Depends. If you drop it, yes. If you hit it against something really hard, yes. I would be foolish if I said it couldn't break at all. It is pottery
- ITEM AVAILABLITY -
Question: Why don't you have my item 'in-stock'? And why will it take 3-14 weeks for it to be done?
Answer: We make close to 300+ different standard stoneware pieces in fourteen different glaze choices. If we were to make just four of every item in every glaze choice, that would be around 10,640 items on hand at any given time. We only have one potter. The process takes about 12- 14 days, no matter what. Orders are created in order of date purchased. Please allow us time to create your order.
- CUSTOM ORDERS -
Question: Do you accept custom orders?
Answer: No, as of 2/8/2021. Due to an unprecedented amount of orders we are not accepting any new custom orders.
- GLAZE COLORS -
Question: What is meant by "variation of our glaze colors, patterns of glazes" on your website?
Answer: Glaze colors can vary from kiln load to kiln load. Many variables come into play for each kiln load.
Thus is the nature of handmade pottery. Computer screens can also vary the color in the image.
Just a few examples of glaze variations from kiln load to kiln load:
- Copperhead: it might have more dark 'dots/flecks' or it can be slightly muted.
- Rustic Copper: there are two glazes on one piece, where they meet might not be in the same local or angle on that particular piece.
- White with Black: the grass pattern will not look exactly the same, but will still have 3 grass designs on it.
- Rustic Red: the grass pattern will not look exactly the same, but it will have 3 grass designs on it. The grass could be darker or lighter. The Rustic Red, is in fact, rustic. It is not a bright red.
Question: Can you change the finish type of your glaze from matte to gloss? Or gloss to semi-gloss?
Answer: The short answer.....No.
- SHIPPING -
Question: Is it better, as far as production/shipping goes, to order a lot all at once or in smaller batches?
Answer: The more you can order at one time, the better if you want the items to 'match' more closely.
- Production: Making multiples of one item or a group of items at the same time is far better.
Better because they will look more or less the same, they will 'nest/stack' better, and they will be in the same kiln load. Letting the 'variables' of that firing carry through on each piece for that particular load.
- Shipping: The more we can fit in a box, the better the shipping cost will be.
Question: Why don't you offer free shipping?
Answer: Multiple reasons. (I'm saying all of this with a happy tone:)
1) I don't add the cost of shipping into the pottery prices. I do try to break even on my shipping prices though.
2) I do not receive free packaging material (bubble wrap, peanuts, tape, fragile stickers, boxes). You would be surprised how much this stuff costs! And get this, that company charges me for freight.
3) The post office doesn't give me any deals on how many boxes I ship and get this, they don't offer free shipping.
4) I have a brick and mortar storefront AND this eCommerce website. I won't charge my in-person customers for shipping (some places add in the price of shipping into their costs) when they are going to take it with them.
